Safety comes first on every local task. Never trespass, never handle hazardous waste, and work with local authorities, owners and communities rather than around them. Children take part only with a parent or guardian. If something feels unsafe, stop and report it instead.

Volunteer for the Foundation
Local Solar System runs mostly on volunteers. If you have a few hours a week, you can help the Foundation itself: handling requests, answering emails, moderating contributions and looking after parts of the site.
Choose a role and tell us about yourself with the form. A Council member replies within two weeks to agree a short trial. Once you are helping, send a short log each month: approved monthly logs earn points. Roles that see personal data start only after you sign a confidentiality agreement.

Handle incoming requests
Sort requests from the website and the general inbox, reply with approved templates, pass the rest on.
Time: 2 to 4 hours a week

Answer learners and teachers
Reply to questions about lessons and tools, and help teachers use the material in class.
Time: 2 to 3 hours a week

Pre-check contributions
Check new submissions for completeness, spam and safety before a Council member reviews them.

Look after a section of the site
Adopt an initiative, a course or the glossary and keep links, figures and credits right.

Review your language
Be the regular reviewer of the machine translation in your language and keep its glossary.
Time: 1 to 3 hours a week

Check accessibility
Test pages and tools with a keyboard, a screen reader, zoom and a slow phone, and report what breaks.

Community and chapters
Welcome new contributors, help people in the same place start a chapter, host a monthly call.
Time: 3 hours a week

Press and outreach
Keep the press list and kit up to date and find talks and partners, with every statement approved first.
Time: 2 hours a week
Find or start a local chapter
Tell us where you live and we will put you in touch with other people nearby when there are enough of you to start a chapter.
A chapter is a group of volunteers who learn and act together where they live: stargazing, litter surveys, light audits, walking groups, teaching the free courses.
Chapters and contributors never collect or receive money for Local Solar System, and never ask anyone for crypto. The only way to donate is our donation gateway.
