The most volcanic place in the solar system, squeezed and heated by Jupiter’s gravity.
Io is squeezed and stretched by Jupiter’s gravity as it moves in a slightly eccentric orbit, kept eccentric by its orbital resonance with Europa and Ganymede. The friction heats its interior and powers hundreds of active volcanoes.
Its surface is coloured yellow, red and white by sulphur compounds and is constantly renewed by eruptions.
